April 6, 2021: Briefings on Taiwan-US Relations


1) US senator calls for increased international support for Taiwan

· In his self-authored opinion piece written for the conservative American news outlet Washington Examiner, Senator Rick Scott called for US allies to increase Taiwan's support.

· The article points out that Beijing's attempts to change Hong Kong's election system are a precursor for pressure against Taiwan.

· Senator Scott remarked that China's threats to Taiwan and its democracy should be a primary concern for other democratic nations worldwide.

2) Chinese military aircraft continue to enter Taiwan's air defense zone

· Ten more Chinese aircraft flew through Taiwan's Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ), with one passing through the Bashi Channel.

· Taiwan's air force continued its response to such incursions and dispatched aircraft to edge the Chinese jets away.

· This incursion also coincided with the Chinese naval vessel Liaoning's passage by Japan.

3) Chinese aircraft carrier sent in a display of capability

· The Chinese aircraft carrier Liaoning, accompanied by five other warships, passed through waters near Okinawa to display capability aimed at the US and Japan.

· Though the ships remained in international waters and did not enter Japanese territory, the navigation path still implies that China's military presence can extend from Taiwan, the Philippines, and Indonesia to Japan and Guam.

· China's military ships and aircraft movement are responses to possible US military intervention into Cross-Strait relations, to which Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga has stated that Japan will work with the US to ease tensions.
