February 1, 2021: Briefings from South Asia

1) Taiwan’s Pegatron to invest in India

· Taiwan’s Pegatron Corporation will invest about USD 151 million (approx.) in the southern province of Tamil Nadu in India.

· It aims to make mobile phones part of its Phase I investment.

· India is trying to attract investments from the companies that want to reduce their dependency on China.

2) Pakistan to get first vaccines from China

· Pakistan is sending a special plane to China to bring 500,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine that China promised to provide.

· The National Command and Operation Center (NCOC) mentioned that Pakistan is now ready for the vaccination program.

· Pakistan has approved two COVID-19 vaccines so far; AstraZeneca Covax and China’s Sinopharm vaccine.

3) Prime Ministers of India and Bangladesh likely to meet on March 26

· Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Narendra Modi are likely to meet on March 26 to celebrate 50 years of Bangladesh’s independence.

· Both countries will hold four secretary-level meetings before the scheduled meeting between the two Prime Ministers.
