January 27, 2021: Briefings from South Asia






1) A Joint Statement is released by India and China after border clash at Naki La in Sikkim

· In spite of diplomatic and military talks, close to 100,000 Indian and Chinese troops are deployed in eastern Ladakh,

implying readiness for the long-haul.

· The Indian soldiers pushed back Chinese soldiers as they attempted to intrude on the border at Sikkim; at least 20 PLA and 4 Indian soldiers were injured.

· According to the 9th Round India-China Joint Statement, substantive results including positive, practical, and constructive understandings are being mutually developed.

2) The US to review deal with Taliban

· Kabul welcomed the Biden administration's move to review the February 2020 deal that Washington signed with Taliban insurgents.

· According to Sediq Sediqqi, spokesperson of the Afghan President Dr. Ashraf Ghani, the US-Taliban agreement has to date failed to deliver tangible outcomes in bringing an end to Taliban violence.

· The review is a response to the stalled intra-Afghan talks in the Qatari capital of Doha, which aimed at ending the conflict in war-torn Afghanistan.

3) PM Oli: Elections will be held as scheduled

· According to PM Oli, the dissolution of the parliament is lawful under the Constitution. Furthermore, he urged members to gear up for the coming election.

· Additionally, Oli's speech focused on the socio-economic aspects of his governance. He stressed the development of local infrastructures such as irrigation facilities and stated that the government is committed to containing the pandemic.
